Heritage Icons Photography Auction

Heritage Auctions has unveiled a treasure trove of signed vintage sports photographs that will enthrall collectors and sports enthusiasts alike. One of the prized possessions included in this mesmerizing collection is a 1948 photo of basketball prodigy George Mikan. This captivating 8×10 Type 1 photograph showcases Mikan in his prime, mirroring the imagery on his revered 1948 Bowman rookie card. What makes this piece even more special is Mikan’s distinctive signature in blue ink, elevating its estimated value to a staggering $20,000.

Stepping back in time, the auction also features a late 1940s photograph capturing Cleveland Browns legend Otto Graham. This iconic image closely resembles the one immortalized on Graham’s 1950 Bowman Football rookie card, complete with his autograph. Another standout item is a 1949 photograph of Jackie Robinson receiving his Silver Bat after clinching the National League batting title and being awarded the coveted MVP title in the same year. This poignant Type I photo, personalized to “Jeff,” holds immense sentimental value.

Transporting us to 1957, another poignant photograph in the collection depicts Jackie Robinson bidding adieu to his celebrated career at Ebbets Field. The image immortalizes Robinson clearing out his locker, with poignant details like his Dodgers cap, home jersey, fielder’s glove, cleats, and equipment bag visible, alongside two historic bats, one belonging to Gil Hodges. This emotional piece is anticipated to command bids exceeding $10,000.

Adding to the allure of the auction is a photo believed to have been used for Willie Mays’ iconic 1952 Topps card. This image not only replicates the imagery on Mays’ card but also features his authentic signature on the front, likely added in the 1990s.

The auction catalog showcases a diverse array of over 150 vintage photographs, some tracing back over a century. Of notable mention is a photo from the 1919 World Series capturing a momentous handshake between Black Sox pitcher Eddie Cicotte and Reds’ starter Dutch Reuther at Redland Field in Cincinnati. This historical image, complete with original paper caption and stamps on the back, is expected to command a starting bid of $8,000.

Among the other prized possessions are rookie photographs of sports luminaries like Hank Aaron (1954), Jack Nicklaus (1962), and Pete Maravich (1970). The catalog also features a stunning array of images immortalizing legends like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and other pre-war sporting icons.

Heritage Auctions’ Icons Photography Auction, a celebration of sports history captured through the lens, is set to conclude on June 13. This event offers a unique opportunity for collectors and aficionados to acquire a piece of sporting heritage and own a tangible slice of history.
