Christy Mathewson Memorabilia Auction

Hunt Auctions is unveiling a treasure trove of over 120 artifacts belonging to the legendary Christy Mathewson. This assortment not only portrays glimpses of his illustrious baseball career but also delves into the personal aspects that made Mathewson an idol to many.

Derived from a donation made by Mathewson’s widow to Keystone College back in 1967, this collection holds an intriguing mix of items that chronicle the various facets of Mathewson’s life – from his triumphs on the diamond to the challenges he faced off the field.

Christy Mathewson, known for his remarkable pitching skills, achieved great feats during his time with the New York Giants. Beyond his impressive record of 373 career wins and 2,500 strikeouts, Mathewson’s character and leadership qualities set him apart. Even during his early days as a standout athlete at Keystone and later as a pivotal figure at Bucknell University, where he notably served as class president, Mathewson’s influence was already making waves.

The items up for auction serve as tangible links to Mathewson’s legacy – from a captivating Carl Horner framed cabinet photo dating back to 1904, expected to fetch from $50,000 to $100,000, to an array of photographs capturing moments from his baseball card depictions and team affiliations like the 1900 Norfolk Phenoms.

The collection pays tribute to Mathewson’s service in World War I, a phase that left an indelible mark on his life. Pieces of his military memorabilia, including his doughboy jacket, a footlocker bearing his handwritten ID, his map case, officer’s hat, and a marked leather uniform belt, all serve as poignant reminders of his sacrificial contributions.

David Hunt, the President of Hunt Auctions, underlined the historical significance of the Mathewson Collection, describing it as a monumental offering, particularly rare for memorabilia dating back to the Deadball Era. The inclusion of personal letters, such as one where Mathewson responds to a young admirer seeking an autograph, not only adds a personal touch to the auction but also illuminates Mathewson’s compassionate nature and his acute awareness of being a role model.

Scheduled to culminate in a live event on June 4, this auction stands as a golden opportunity for enthusiasts and collectors to acquire a piece of history from the personal stash of one of baseball’s most iconic personalities. Whether for sentimental attachment or historical reverence, the Mathewson memorabilia on offer promises to enrich any collection with a touch of baseball nostalgia.
