Rare Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth Cards Shine at Heritage Auction

In the recent Heritage Spring Sports Card Auction, collectors and enthusiasts alike were treated to a dazzling display of vintage sports memorabilia, with two rare and coveted cards stealing the spotlight. The auction, known for its prestigious lineup of items, witnessed a T206 Ty Cobb card and a M101-5 Babe Ruth rookie card fetching staggering amounts, highlighting the timeless appeal and value of these historical artifacts.

The star of the show was the T206 Ty Cobb card, distinguished by its association with Cobb’s tobacco brand, which commanded a jaw-dropping price of $432,000. What makes this card truly special is its rarity, with only around 25 known to exist. The card’s back, emblazoned with the words “King of the Smoking Tobacco World,” stands out as a unique feature in the T206 set, further enhancing its allure. Its glossy finish serves as a nod to its origins with a now-defunct tobacco product, adding a layer of mystique to its already storied history.

Equally captivating was the M101-5 Sporting News Blank Back Babe Ruth rookie card, the only of its kind graded PSA 4, which closed at an impressive $348,000. This card, showcasing the early days of the iconic baseball legend, is a testament to Ruth’s enduring legacy in the world of sports memorabilia. Other notable sales from the auction included a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card selling for $204,000 and a 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card fetching $210,000, further underscoring the demand for vintage trading cards featuring sports legends.

With over 2,450 bidders participating from around the globe, the Heritage Auction achieved total sales exceeding $10 million. Particularly noteworthy was the sale of one of the three PSA 10 graded 1969 Topps Nolan Ryan rookie cards, which achieved an impressive $180,000. Chris Ivy, Heritage’s Director of Sports Auctions, commended the diverse appeal of the auction, catering to both high-profile card collectors and those seeking substantial returns on previously undervalued items.

One of the standout moments of the auction was the sale of a signed 1951 Bowman Willie Mays rookie card, a rarity with only 31 signed copies known to exist, which sold for $126,000. Collectors also demonstrated a keen interest in unopened materials, with a 1967 Topps Football cello box and a 1970 Topps baseball (Mixed Series) cello box each commanding $81,000. Furthermore, a Jackie Robinson UCLA football debut ticket stub surpassed expectations, selling for $22,800 and further fueling excitement among attendees.

A notable highlight came from the discovery of eight 1914 Lawrence Semon issue postcards, including a Ty Cobb card, at an estate sale, turning a modest $400 investment into an astonishing $50,370 windfall. This revelation underscores the potential for extraordinary finds within the vintage card market, igniting a sense of anticipation and discovery among collectors and enthusiasts.
