Rare Find: 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle Card Up for Auction

In the realm of baseball memorabilia, where treasures hold immense value, a truly exceptional item has emerged – a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card unlike any other. This distinct piece, now being auctioned by eBay seller Greg Morris, has undergone significant alterations from its original state, presumably as part of a vintage scrapbook assembly. Despite its less-than-pristine condition, the card’s rarity is capturing the interest of collectors and enthusiasts far and wide.

The authentication process by Beckett Grading has confirmed the authenticity of the Mantle card, which has undergone extensive trimming, resulting in the removal of a substantial part of its iconic background. Only minimal portions of the card’s bottom and right borders remain intact, bearing visible signs of wear and creasing that hint at its once-cherished status before its transformation.

The reverse side of the card presents its own set of challenges, with adhesive residue obscuring a significant portion of the original text, indicating a lack of foresight regarding the card’s future collectible value.

Given its unique journey within the hobby, with authentication dating back to 2017 and its recent acquisition by Morris from another auction house, this altered Mantle card labeled as Authentic/Altered has sparked considerable interest. In a market familiar with the impressive sale prices of low-grade Mantle cards, this “Half Mantle” stands out for its distinctive modifications, potentially fetching a significant price in the tens of thousands as the auction progresses.

While this card is not the only one of its kind, with a similarly modified Mantle card showcased by CSG/CGC last year in slightly better condition but also missing substantial portions of its original border and showing signs of alteration at the back, it highlights the enduring appeal of Mickey Mantle in the collector’s world.

The ongoing bidding activity underscores the lasting allure of the baseball icon, proving that even in the most unexpected presentations, Mickey Mantle’s legacy continues to captivate enthusiasts. To track the sale price of this remarkable Mantle card, collectors are encouraged to stay tuned and follow the auction’s developments closely.
